Asbestos Survey and Removal Project Design

ENERCON completed a comprehensive asbestos survey of a major Airport Main Terminal and Concourses. The facility was constructed in the 1960's and has undergone numerous renovations and additions since that time. The majority of the mechanical equipment and piping systems that were part of the original construction have asbestos insulation, with a mixture of insulating materials used in subsequent system alterations and additions.
The survey to locate, identify and document the location and amount of asbestos-containing materials in the facility was performed in support of a major expansion involving complete renovation of the main terminal building, demolition of the existing passenger arrival-departure concourses and the addition of new arrival-departure concourses. The demolition and reconstruction is being performed in nine phases over a period of several years, therefore the survey had to be documented to provide the location and quantities of asbestos materials by construction phase. The survey required more than 200 samples and involved 150 homogeneous areas. The total amount of asbestos-containing materials identified consisted of over 8,000 linear feet of piping insulation, over 3,000 insulated fittings and over 13,000 square feet of duct insulation, air handler insulation, sprayed-on fireproofing and floor tiles/adhesive. Due to the configuration of the ceilings in the terminal and concourses, access was extremely limited in many areas and required review of the original facility plans coupled with a visual inspection and sampling to locate and quantify the asbestos present.
