NORM Materials Decontamination & Decommissioning

Heritage Minerals
Lakehurst, NJ

ENERCON led the demolition and decommissioning of the Heritage Minerals facility in Lakehurst, New Jersey. Mineral processing and extraction occurred on the site from 1972 to 1990. Dry and wet mill operations extracted numerous minerals from the mineral sands located near the New Jersey coast. Waste materials from the processing concentrated uranium and thorium in the sands and resulted in some materials reaching the classification of a regulated source material. During processing operations, these materials were distributed at various locations on the site resulting in fugitive licensable materials.

ENERCON located the materials, managed the excavation and completed separation of these fugitive source materials from the remaining impacted sands. These materials were shipped off-site for disposal. The resulting contaminated waste was estimated at 2,000 tons of impacted equipment and structural material. In order to control project disposal cost, material was segregated, sized, cleaned, and scanned. Releasable materials were recycled as scrap, and impacted materials were cleaned, eliminating the need to dispose of any materials off-site as low-level radiological waste. Additional soil remediation resulted in NRC license termination.
