Radiological (Fission/Activitation Products) Decontamination & Decommissioning

Pump Repair Facility
Cheswick, Pennsylvania

Westinghouse Electric Corporation decided to terminate naval pump repair operations at its Cheswick facility in Pennsylvania. The facility had been used since 1960 for repair and reconditioning of nuclear powered submarine and aircraft carrier components, including reactor coolant pumps and motors. Due to declining orders from the government, continued operation of the facility was no longer economical. Radiological Decontamination & Decomissioning (D&D) activities began in early April on the three buildings that housed naval pump repair operations.

ENERCON was the technical lead and radiological services contractor for the successful decontamination and demolition of Westinghouse Electro Mechanical Division Nuclear Pump and Motor Decontamination and Repair facility. This decommissioning was conducted in accordance with NRC NUREG/CR-5849 Guidance Document and Regulatory Guide 1.86 release criteria. Project acceptance criteria included release of the facility from the site's NRC License so that it would be available for public use. ENERCON was responsible for characterization surveys, project planning, radiological health and safety, waste segregation and removal, management and analyses of all radiological survey data, and completion of the Final Radiological Status Report. Extensive surveys of site materials and equipment were completed to allow free release of significant portions of the building structure rather than 100 percent disposal as low level radioactive waste.
