Boeing HangarPond, An ENERCON company, was selected by the Jacksonville Aviation Authority (JAA) to design and develop a new maintenance, repair, and overhaul Boeing hangar facility at Cecil Airport for Boeing’s expanding military aircraft service operations. The approximately 370,000-square-foot complex strengthens aviation and aerospace resiliency by providing flexible, high-capacity infrastructure designed to support multiple aircraft types and evolving mission requirements.

The facility includes more than 260,000 square feet of maintenance bays, 48,000 square feet of shops and utility areas, and approximately 49,000 square feet of offices and employee support spaces. Its eight bays can accommodate at least six F-18 aircraft or one P-8 aircraft per bay. Measuring roughly a quarter mile long and 200 feet deep, the hangar features 50-foot doors, custom steel trusses, exposed structural bracing, polished concrete floors, and full mechanical air conditioning to improve working conditions during Jacksonville’s warmer months.

Pond served as principal designer, providing civil, structural, architectural, and electrical engineering services while coordinating with a multidisciplinary team responsible for construction management, mechanical systems, fire protection, telecommunications, security, surveying, geotechnical work, testing, inspections, and signage.

The design balances operational efficiency with a more approachable human scale. Cast concrete lower walls provide durability, insulated metal panels improve cost efficiency, and clerestory windows bring natural light into the maintenance bays. A central curtain wall opens views to the airfield and highlights the flight operations and executive areas. On the landside, the office wing visually divides the 1,300-foot hangar while organizing public, staff, maintenance, and shipping functions.

Inside, corporate finishes are paired with exposed industrial elements, wood paneling, pendant lighting, and Boeing Blue accents. The completed facility combines resilience, functionality, employee comfort, and a strong architectural identity to support Boeing’s long-term aviation maintenance mission. It also demonstrates how integrated design can turn a highly technical industrial building into a durable, efficient, and welcoming workplace.
