Enercon Services Inc. (ENERCON) developed advanced GOTHIC flooding models for a U.S. commercial nuclear plant to modernize and enhance the flexibility of existing Analyses of Record (AOR), which were originally based on hand calculations. By transitioning to GOTHIC, a state-of-the-art computer code modeling program, our team enabled more dynamic and detailed simulations of potential flooding scenarios. This advancement improves the plant’s ability to assess and mitigate flood risks that may arise from operational changes or unforeseen events.
Each level of the Auxiliary Building is comprised of over 100 rooms and was individually modeled to include flood-susceptible areas and adjacent spaces potentially affected by water ingress. The models incorporated complex features such as interconnected room drain systems, open penetrations, door gaps, hatches, and sump pump logic. Additionally, boundary conditions across multiple levels were meticulously tracked, and structural failure scenarios, such as door breaches, were simulated to evaluate their impact on flood propagation.
This comprehensive modeling approach significantly enhances the plant’s preparedness and responsiveness to configuration changes and their effects on existing internal flooding analyses. GOTHIC provides a more accurate and responsive modeling methodology than traditional hand calculations, enabling engineering teams to save substantial time when evaluating previously unevaluated configurations or conditions.
